What is Futurism?
Futurism is an art movement of the 20th century. It had its main reign of influence starting in 1909 and ending in the late 1920’s. It came after the movement of expressionism and continued while cubism, suprematism, dada, Bauhaus, constructivism and surrealism became influential. It derived from Italy. Paintings were based on current social issues relating to the future. E.g. upcoming technology, violence, industrial revolution etc. These subjects are over-emphasised through the use of various art techniques. The overlapping, manipulation and repetition of geometric shapes create a sense of movement within the subject of the artwork. Works often appear abstract although they represent literal ideas, thoughts or innovation in the artist’ culture. The most important aspects of futurism are colour, line, shape and movement.
Characteristics
Futurism developed to glorify the urban life as well a machinery/industrialization. Futurism employs techniques of Divisionism, Cubism features, dynamism, urban subject matters, and depiction of movement. The futurists defined themselves as anti-romantic, and they wanted to follow their own moods, so their works are highly emotive. They promote science and technique but they want them to be poetic and lyric. The characteristics of the movement were their interest in an art forged out of the beauty of speed and a ‘glorification of war’. The forms in their artworks are ‘full of freedom’, breaking the elements but not completely abstract. Colour was important, and often futurism artists employed the use of layers and the opacity of layers in their works. Most were abstract and emotive, but some also incorporated subject matter, whether it was obvious or subtle.
